Dementia

If a person reaches a certain age and she/he is not able to remember everything and says or does confusing things, this person might have Alzheimer's disease. Usually we encounter terms such as Alzheimer's disease and dementia earlier. So for example adolescent people have been jokingly asked if they had Alzheimer's, when they had forgotten the key or the homework.

Fact is however the Alzheimer's disease is being increased. Today about 60% of all dementias are Alzheimer´s disease. Main reason for that is the increasing life expectancy of people. Delimiting this, it must be said also that not every poor memory of the short- or long-term memory is at once Alzheimer's disease. Often in these case a general dementia, with Alzheimer's is a special form of dementia.

Several people suffer from dementia but this doesn't mean that the disease proceeds the same at all. Dementia patients can live quite independently for a long time regarding the circumference of the disease. Sothere are for example shared flats for dementia patients but with Alzheimer's patients this is something hardly impossible. When this possible, generally this could be tried only at the beginning of the disease. As soon as the disease progresses too far or the people are bedridden, they can't remain in such a residential model.

Circumstances or factors which promote the development of dementia:

Like in all diseases, there are influencing factors which can promote the emergence of a disease. When diagnosed with dementia generally the factor are those that damage the brain in any way. These factors include inter alia:

  •     concussions
  •     encephalitis
  •     brain hemorrhages, high blood pressure
  •     other head injury (e.g., craniocerebral injury)
  •     brain tumors
  •     stroke
  •     brain infarctions
  •     alcohol, drugs
